VEELS band gap measurements using monochromated electrons

With the development of monochromators for transmission electron microscopes, valence electron energy-loss spectroscopy (VEELS) has become a powerful technique to study the band structure of materials with high spatial resolution. However, artefacts such as Cerenkov radiation and surface effects pose a limit for interpretation of the low-loss spectra; also the inelastic delocalisation restricts...

Transmission electron microscopy at 20 kV for imaging and spectroscopy.

The electron optical performance of a transmission electron microscope (TEM) is characterized for direct spatial imaging and spectroscopy using electrons with energies as low as 20 keV. The highly stable instrument is equipped with an electrostatic monochromator and a C(S)-corrector. At 20 kV it shows high image contrast even for single-layer graphene with a lattice transfer of 213 pm (tilted i...

Exciton mapping at subwavelength scales in two-dimensional materials.

Spatially resolved electron-energy-loss spectroscopy (EELS) is performed at diffuse interfaces between MoS2 and MoSe2 single layers. With a monochromated electron source (20 meV) we successfully probe excitons near the interface by obtaining the low loss spectra at the nanometer scale. The exciton maps clearly show variations even with a 10 nm separation between measurements; consequently, the ...

The effect of cationic surfactant on the structure, morphology and optical band gap of ferrites synthesized by a microwave sol–gel auto-combustion method

Cu and Ni ferrites as the semiconductor materials were synthesized by a microwave sol-gel auto-combustion method. Two cationic surfactants, sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) and cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB), were applied and the influence of surfactants on the properties of the Cu and Ni ferrite particles was studied. The samples were characterized by X-ray powder diffraction (XRD) pattern,...

High-yield synthesis and optical properties of g-C3N4.

Graphitic carbon nitride (g-C3N4), a metal-free semiconductor with a band gap of 2.7 eV, has received considerable attention owing to its fascinating photocatalytic performances under visible-light. g-C3N4 exhibits high thermal and chemical stability and non-toxicity such that it has been considered as the most promising photocatalyst for environmental improvement and energy conservation. Hence...
